It’s the New Year and everything is about resolutions and inspiration. Now, having the hobby I have, I’m of course thinking of beauty inspirations with which I want to surround myself with.

If somehow you managed to sleep through the fireworks – you’d be hard pushed to miss the barrage of “special announcements” that signalled the beginning of a new season and a new year of girl power (Spice Girls anyone?) And with these announcements came some strong contenders for my beauty inspo each of whom represent the transformative power of makeup.

Among these announcements was Max Factor‘s bold move from high street to high glamour, announcing Marilyn Monroe as their Global Glamour Ambassador. 80 years ago, it was Mr. Max Factor himself who transformed the sweet and humble Norma Jean to the sultry sex-kitten recognised around the world. She’s the epitome of the word icon; what’s not to love about juicy red lips and fluttering lashes? Marilyn is serving as inspiration for #GlamJan, a New Years Resolution I can whole-heartedly get behind. Keep your peepers peeled for a post later this week!

From classic beauty to a modern icon – not a few days later, another announcement came that had the beauty world tingling with delight, as the illustrious Lisa Eldridge announced her role as Creative Director at Lancome. She did wonderful things with Boots own brand, No 7, while at the helm so I have no doubt that she will bring just as much buzz to Lancome. Professionally Ms Eldridge is powerhouse when it comes to painting famous faces. Her YouTube channel and blog have leveled the playing field for us everyday enthusiasts, fearlessly spilling insider knowledge and inspiring the masses. Can I just be her when I grow up? I’d be doing well to be half the lady she is …

For a little alternative inspiration, bear with me, I’ve been watching a lot of Drag Queens. Yes, when it comes to the all-concurring power of contouring and graphic liner, but beyond that they champion the transformative capabilities of a bit of slap. I’m not going to lie, I’m a little bit jealous. Why does “looking like a drag queen” have to be a bad thing? What if I want to wear black sparkly lipstick and peacock eyeshadow?  Aside from the possible colour combinations, my alternative icons are such because they are artists and performers and creatives. Jinkx Monsoon, winner of season five of RuPaul’s Drag Race, has given me a kick-up-the-arse in terms of embracing your quirks and getting on with what really matters. The rest, as she so rightly puts it, is just water off a duck’s back.

So three, very different, yet equally inspiring, icons. Who are you looking to for beauty inspiration this year?
